Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screens and Strainers
Dontech Industries’ Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screens and Strainers are engineered for the removal of suspended solids from process and wastewater streams
Externally-fed Rotary Drum Screen / Strainer
American made since 1980, this stainless steel wedge wire screen is self-cleaning by nature due to constant back washing. This often allows for only intermittent use of the spray bar cleaning system, reducing water usage. The use of the doctor blade system makes this mechanical screen well suited when oils and grease are present. Designed for peak flow, solids and fats, oils, grease loadings in the wastewater/process water, these units can be configured with a variety of piping scenarios, overall dimensions and slot openings and oversized sumps. The internal bypass systems solve the problem of upset or unforseen dump conditions.

Externally Fed Screens
Externally-fed Rotary Drum Screens are individually designed to meet the client’s needs including but not limited to location of inlet/outlet, pumped or gravity feed, and standard or oversized sump options.
All externally fed screens are equipped with overflow bypass provisions, eliminating overflow concerns.
All stainless steel construction featuring a fully chassis, adjustable legs, sump, and other extraneous parts with no hidden add-on costs. The wedge wire screen with variable slot opening provides solids removal based on peak flow, TSS, FOG, and/or particle size distribution.
Each system is equipped with an integral sump which can be oversized and/or conformed to meet design and downstream conditions.
Externally fed screens are equipped with high pressure, CIPable spray manifold systems which can be run automatically or with manual operation.
For Food Applications: USDA approved for in-process use and designed to allow for the entire screen to be CIPed.
Screening systems are offered with a wide range of electrical control panel options, from basic to sophisticated control circuitry.
Additionally, wear and replacement parts are available, assuring years of uninterrupted service, including but not limited to replacement screen assemblies which allow the upgrade of the screening unit while maintaining the chassis.

How Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screens Work
Externally fed rotary drum screens are used in wastewater treatment processes and other industrial applications to separate solid materials from liquid. These screens consist of a rotating drum with slots on its surface. Understanding the process.
Separate Solids from Liquid
Externally fed rotary drum screens remove solids from process and wastewater streams. In other words, they protect downstream equipment and improve water quality before the next treatment step.
Capture Debris with the Right Slot Size
As liquid flows onto the drum, the screen surface captures debris on the outside. Meanwhile, screened liquid passes through the slots. For example, larger slots let larger particles pass, while smaller slots capture finer solids. Because of that, slot size depends on your flow rate, particle size, and performance goals.
Keep Performance Steady with Cleaning
To prevent buildup, Dontech adds a cleaning system that helps keep the screen open. Typically, spray nozzles rinse the drum as it rotates, and the doctor blade helps remove solids that stick to the surface. As a result, the screen maintains consistent throughput with less risk of clogging.
Match the Design to Your Application
Externally fed rotary drum screens come in different configurations, including drum size, slot opening, piping layout, and sump options. Therefore, the best design depends on your influent, flow rate, and how you handle the removed solids.
Overall, externally fed rotary drum screens play a crucial role in the initial treatment of liquid streams by effectively separating solid contaminants, improving water quality, and protecting downstream processes and equipment.
How Dontech Builds Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screens
Dontech Industries Inc specializes in custom fabrication of externally fed rotary drum screens. We follow a clear, step-by-step process so every screen matches your application, performance goals, and site requirements.
Initial Consultation
To start, we meet with you to understand your process needs. We review the material you want to screen, flow rate, solids type and size, and any special requirements. In addition, we discuss operating conditions and maintenance preferences so the final design fits your system.
Design and Engineering
Next, our engineering team turns your requirements into a custom design. With over 45 years of experience, we size the drum and select slot openings to match your flow and solids profile. As a result, the screen delivers consistent separation while supporting your downstream equipment.
Material Selection
Then we choose materials that match your environment and duty cycle. We typically use corrosion-resistant, durable materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and selected polymers, depending on the application. Therefore, your screen holds up under real-world operating conditions.
Fabrication and Manufacturing
After we finalize the design, our technicians fabricate the screen using skilled craftsmanship and modern equipment. We build the drum, screening media (wedge wire or perforated), support structure, drive components, and related assemblies to the required specifications.
Custom Features and Modifications
In addition, we can add custom options to match your installation and layout. For example, we can tailor inlet and outlet locations, sump size, discharge setup, leg length, access covers, and other site-specific details.
Quality Control and Testing
Before shipping, we perform thorough quality checks and testing. We verify critical dimensions, fit-up, and functional performance so the screen meets your design targets. As a result, you receive equipment you can trust from day one.
Delivery and Installation
Once the unit passes inspection, we prepare it for delivery to your facility. If needed, we can also support installation to ensure proper placement, alignment, and integration into your process or treatment system.
Training and Ongoing Support
Finally, we provide training and ongoing support so your operators and maintenance team can run the equipment efficiently. In other words, we help you protect performance long after startup.
Documentation Package
We also supply a documentation package that includes drawings, specifications, and maintenance guidelines. Therefore, your team has clear references for operation, service, and future upkeep.
By following this process, Dontech Industries Inc designs, builds, and delivers externally fed rotary drum screens that match your treatment or process needs. Custom fabrication ensures the right fit, reliable performance, and long-term efficiency.
